The human body is all about balance and collaboration. Every function in the body works with a variety of other systems in order to make everything flow. Understanding the inner workings of your own body will make life choices easier and expectations more realistic.

Men are sexual beings from the time the egg and sperm meet. While you were still in the uterus, your penis experienced reflexogenic erections. After delivery, male babies typically have their first erection within the first few minutes of life.

During sleep, men typically have three to five erections during rapid eye movement or REM sleep. Each erection happens about every sixty to ninety minutes and can last between ten and twenty minutes. The level of your sexual activity has no influence on this.

This nighttime activity is done in order keep the penis tissues oxygenated. This keeps the whole system healthy and functioning. Studies have shown that even 90 year-old men in good health can still achieve and maintain an erection.

Sexuality is a big part of your life. Some people may associate sexuality to intercourse alone, but it goes much further than that. It is a huge part of who you are and sexuality can influence your body, attitudes, experiences and emotions.

Most men’s relationship with their own sexuality starts in the infant stage. Babies are fascinated with exploring their own bodies. This doesn’t change as babies become boys and find that there is some enjoyment involved in touching themselves. Little girls and little boys will also try to explore the opposite’s equipment out of a sense of curiosity.

The human sexual response cycle has developed over eons into a delicate dance that most men know by now. Some men still have unrealistic expectations of how sex should be. They base these expectations on fantasy models instead of embracing reality. If you want to experience the sexual response fully, you need to understand both your response as well as your partner’s.

When things go wrong with the sexual response, the vascular system is typically the culprit. Penile vascular problems are the most common cause of erectile dysfunction (ED). When everything is right in the vascular world, blood flow increases to the genital area causing erection to occur.

There are several conditions that can cause ED to become an issue. High blood pressure, medication side effects and vascular disease are the three top physical causes. Uncontrolled diabetes and vascular injuries also make the list.

ED and other sexual malfunctions are caused by psychological, relationship stresses and situational factors as well. Performance anxiety, distraction, anti-erotic thoughts, passive emotions and even depression all fall under the psychological malfunctions.

Relation stresses can include conflict, miscommunication and anger. They may also include feelings of frustration, coercion, lack of desire and emotional isolation. Sometimes shyness, inhibition and lack of full arousal are also underlying causes of ED.

Situation factors vary. The most common ones are fatigue, lack of privacy and intercourse without the proper level of arousal. Any of these three can cause ED issues. They can also affect your partner’s side of things.

Sex is not just a physical act. Your penis is just one member of a whole functioning network. When there is a problem on one level, everything else is affected. Understanding the inner relationship of your sexual body will help you to learn how to keep it working all together.
